CAI Project Managers Zavi Swain and Sam Young recently traveled to Northern BC to visit various grantee sites supported through our 2024 round of the Capacity Building Grant for First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and Urban Indigenous-led Support Recovery Operators.

During their visit, they connected with Gya’wa’tlaab Healing Centre Society, Wilp Si’Satxw Community Healing Centre, and Split Rock Healing House: Tsë lhts’ënc’il nec’igekh be yikh. They were grateful to be in community — sharing meals, participating in drumming circles, and visiting the Split Rock, a sacred site to the Laksilyu clan.

Last week in Kelowna, we came together with peer groups from across the region for two days of learning, reflection, and relationship-building.

Hosted on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation, the gathering created space for connection—rooted in trust, culture, and lived experience. From Indigenous harm reduction to trauma-informed practice and peer-led wellness, the sessions were grounded in care, compassion, and the wisdom of those doing the work every day.

Thank you to everyone who contributed your voice, experience, and energy. This community continues to inspire what’s possible when we lead together.

Today in Victoria, CAI Board Chair Vanessa Wideski, Board Member Joanna Gislason, and Executive Director Julia Kaisla had the opportunity to meet with BC’s Minister of Health, Hon. Josie Osborne, to share highlights from our work across the province.

Together, they spoke to the critical role that community-led mental health and substance use initiatives play in advancing wellness and community health in BC.

We’re grateful to Minister Osborne for her time and thoughtful engagement, and we look forward to continued collaboration in support of community-driven solutions
