What This Grantee Is Doing for Community Counselling

Kamloops Family Resources Society (also known as "The Tree") centers their work around the goal of eliminating the shame and stigma faced by mothers who struggle with substance use. Addictions to substances is usually correlated with the unmet need for coping with mental health symptoms, stress, and grief, including symptoms related to trauma responses and PTSD. The Tree's counsellors take a trauma-informed approach to uncover the root of addiction and help clients move towards healing and recovery through self-awareness, education, and self-compassion. This approach also acknowledges the importance of creating individualized treatment plans instead of applying a ‘one shoe fits all’ approach to each client's journey to excellence and wellness.

CAI Community Counselling Funding supports a full-time substance-use counsellor, group therapy and workshops, as well as activities that reduce barriers to accessing services such as transportation costs and on-site childcare.

"Participants in our counselling program have benefited greatly from our counselling program as they are able to access counseling directly from our agency where they are already accessing other services and they are able to access counselling almost immediately."
