What This Grantee Is Doing for Community Counselling

The Circle of Indigenous Nations Society (COINS) is an Aboriginal non-profit society that provides cultural support, services and resources for Aboriginal people in the West Kootenay Boundary region.

Their vision is to support healthy, self-determining, proud and vibrant Indigenous individuals, families and communities, by providing programs rooted in Indigenous practices that strengthen cultural connection and support holistic healing and learning. Community Counselling funding supports COINS' counselling program, “Healing Our Spirits”, which addresses mental health and substance use issues through traditional healing methods.

Counselling at COINS involves:
-Individual and group counselling
- Traditional talking circles in the communities of Nelson, Grand Forks, Nakusp, Trail, Kaslo, Salmo, Castlegar and Salmo
- Wellbriety (Indigenous 12 step) programs
- Cultural case management
- Healing circles and ceremonies
- Referrals and support accessing community resources, cultural supports and treatment options
